Marine engineering is an engineering science that encloses mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, electronic engineering, and computer science engineering for the purposes of various designing, operations and maintenance of watercraft propulsion on-shore, off-shore and also onboard systems and oceanographic, shipbuilding technologies.

Marine Engineering is a unique world majorly deals with the engineering, repairing, maintenance of various vessels i.e., Boats, ships, Underwater Vehicles, Oil rigs and such.

The actual works of the Marine Engineers would be little harder both physically as well as mentally. In fact, Mental fitness is the most essential one than the physical fitness to explore the ocean.

            Marine engineers generally lives with a wide range of systems including engines, turbines, boilers, heat exchangers, pumps & compressors, machineries such as electrical, hydraulic, refrigeration and steam, water, fuel oil, lubricating oil, compressed gas, and electrical systems, equipment for automation and controls, equipment for fire-fighting and other forms of damage control and systems for handling cargos.

Higher graded officials of Marine engineers become involved with structural issues, including inspection and surveying, corrosion protection, and repairing inspection of vessels.

Marine engineers are only focused highly on the main propulsion plant, the powering and mechanism of the ship functions such as steering, anchoring, cargo handling, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, electrical power generation, and electrical power distribution, interior and exterior communication, and other related requirements.

To say in simple words, Marine engineers are simply mechanical engineers, those who have acquired their orientation of marine resources through various studies and experiences.

Generally, Marine Engineering is set as a general four years degree but, the special thing is that it includes various Class Studies, I.V., Design Labs, On-Shore & Off-Shore Trainings, Captain’s & Chief Engineer’s fellowship programs, and a lot.

One aspect of Ships’ mechanical operation of Naval Architects has some relationship with Marine Engineering.

However, Naval architects are purely concerned with the overall planning, designing and construction of various buoyant structures such as ships, boats, Barges, Submarines, and Floats which all actually operates in water, which also includes the construction and operation of the power plants Rigs, Port Structures, propulsion systems and other mechanical equipment of these structures and also making alterations in them.

The general theory of naval architecture deals with the structural mechanisms of ships, vibration theory, designing theory, shipbuilding technology, hull construction, and ship propulsion plants.

A naval designer/builder must think about/believe especially the following factors:

  • Floatability: the ability of the ship to remain floating while meeting the needed things of the vessel’s service under different weather and water conditions or after being damaged by crash or grounding.
  • Strength: To survive loads for which is meant the ability of the ship to return to its upright position after being inclined by wind, sea, or any conditions of loading.
  • Speed: Which are generally decided by the hull structure and the type of engines, boilers, and propellers.
  • Steering: Design of the rudder and the hull structure to produce turning.
  • Living conditions: Including good enough fresh air/machines that bring fresh air and other health and safety things to carefully think about.

 

More design techniques are faced in the designing and construction of warships which involves Heavy loads in the form of gun turrets, serving or acting to prevent harm and protective metal or other coverings and other facts too.

 

Naval Architects makes three major basic plans for the construction of a ship.

  • The Sheer Plan
  • The Profile Plan and
  • The Body Plan

Also, a huge number of general and detail drawings are made, which include all the internal and external equipment.

Usually, Naval Architecture studies are always combined with certain Co-Operational subjects such as Ship Buildings, Oceanography, Off-Shore Engineering, Marine Technologies.

Naval Architecture along with the Supporting subject is generally set up as a four years degree in general throughout the nation or the world in which the studies include various Class Studies, I.V., Design Labs, Cath Labs, Off-Shore Training like Ship Construction Yard Training and various Ship Designing Software.

In order to have a successful career at sea, it is important you make the right decisions at the start. Degree or Diploma in Nautical Science or Marine Engineering are two ways through one can get a job as a Navy Officer on merchant ships.

 

            The main duty of the Nautical Officer would be planning among the different sea routes for the different kinds of Ship Voyages.

                       

            The Students after their successful studies joins a ship as trainee cadet officer generally referred to as a Deck Cadet. After a good sufficient experience duration at the sea, which varies with the course pursued as per the undergraduate level and clearing required competency exams, the Deck Cadet becomes eligible to become a navigating officer onboard on a merchant ship. This first promotion comes with the designation of a Third Mate or Junior Officer.

 

            A Nautical Officer or a Cadet must be well equipped with various necessary theoretical, practical knowledge and managerial skills required are

  • Seamanship

In general, the Nautical Science stream is provided in two Levels as

  • Sc. in NAUTICAL SCIENCE

GP – RATING

GP Rating course stands for General Purpose Rating course. It is a pre-sea training course that can be pursued even by a 10th passed students. This department also one among the career in Merchant Navy.

 

The jobs after completing the GP Rating course would be actually financially rewarding.

 

GP Rating is a course of 6 months long, which focuses on training cadets in two main roles of the shipping sector :

  • Deck Crew and
  • Engine Crew.

Deck and Engine Rating programs are available as Individual courses. But GP Rating combines both and trains the candidate for Deck as well as Engine Rating conditions and aspects.
